Top Tips for Touring In Dorset

Dorset is one of the UK’s most spectacular destinations for a touring holiday, offering breathtaking coastal scenery, charming villages, and unforgettable outdoor adventures. Whether you're planning a camping holiday in Charmouth, exploring the Jurassic Coast, or looking for dog-friendly places in Dorset, there’s something for everyone. To help you make the most of your trip, here are our top tips for touring in Dorset.

Plan Your Route & Must-See Destinations

When touring in Dorset, it’s worth planning your route in advance to make sure you don’t miss the best sights. From iconic landmarks to hidden gems, here are some must-visit spots:

  • Charmouth Beach – A top location for fossil hunting and scenic coastal walks.
  • Durdle Door & Lulworth Cove – Some of the most famous spots on the Jurassic Coast, perfect for photography and coastal hikes.
  • Lyme Regis – Just a short drive from Charmouth, this historic seaside town has a picturesque harbour, fossil-rich beaches, and independent shops.
  • Golden Cap – The highest point on the South Coast, offering stunning panoramic views.
  • Corfe Castle – A fascinating historic site surrounded by a charming village and countryside walks.

Travel Smart & Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Dorset’s winding country lanes and limited parking can make driving challenging, especially in peak season. Consider eco-friendly travel options to make your trip easier and more sustainable:

  • Hop on the Jurassic Coaster Bus – A fantastic way to explore the coastline without the hassle of parking.
  • Cycle through the Dorset countryside – There are plenty of scenic cycling routes, including the Undercliff path in Lyme Regis and the Marshwood Vale Loop. Take a furture look on cycling in Dorset.
  • Use Park & Ride services – Ideal for visiting busy towns like Lyme Regis, parking can be found near Lyme Regis Golf Club operating over bank holidays and school holidays.

By choosing greener ways to explore, you’ll help preserve Dorset’s natural beauty while enjoying a more relaxing adventure.

Enjoy Free & Dog-Friendly Activities

If you're looking for dog-friendly places in Dorset or budget-friendly ways to explore, there are plenty of options:

  • Walk the South West Coast Path – Enjoy breathtaking views and fresh sea air with your four-legged friend.
  • Visit dog-friendly beaches – Many beaches, including sections of Charmouth Beach, are perfect for dogs outside of peak summer months.
  • Go fossil hunting – Charmouth and Lyme Regis are fantastic for finding prehistoric treasures along the shore. Take a look at The Best Places to Fossil Hunt in West Dorset for more inspiration!
  • Explore historic villages – Take a stroll through Bridport, a vibrant market town with a rich history, or visit Abbotsbury, home to a stunning medieval abbey and the famous swannery. If you're heading east, Burton Bradstock offers thatched cottages and a beautiful coastal setting.

'Excellent site with clean facilities, friendly staff!'

'Friendly staff, the staff in the shop was incredibly welcoming! Loved how we were escorted to our pitch and also offered help with putting the caravan on the pitch. Swimming pool was small but ideal, good sauna! Outdoor pool was lovely also! Facilities were spotless considering we had awful weather they work extremely hard! Very clean site, great value for money!'

"Definitely will be back"

Good location with Charmouth beach and lyme regis near. Nice facilities on site and nice rooms. The tow bar restaurant is a gem with great food. Liked the activities on our stay like bingo. Overall a good stay and would love to come back again.

"Everything we needed"

Very tidy site, well laid out and well equipped. Towbar restaurant offered a good selection of quality food at all meal times, very good value for money and super friendly service. There is a small shop on site for all your essentials with access to another slightly larger shop in the village. Two pools and children’s play areas plus a gaming room were a real bonus. Shower and toilet blocks were cleaned regularly and always kept in good order. Location is fantastic, especially for avid fossil hunters with Charmouth beach around 20 minutes easy walk away through the village.

"What a wonderful place"

We have just returned from a wonderful holiday at Newlands. We stayed in the studio apartment block down the end (A17). The apartment was incredibly clean, spacious and had everything we needed for a short stay. My twin sons (3.5 years old) had the twin room, mum had the double bed, and I stayed on a blow up mattress that I brought with. We were very comfy.
