5 Things to do in Lyme Regis

As anyone who has visited it can tell you, Lyme Regis is a very special and unique place, with lots to see and do. This week on the blog we’re looking at five of the best attractions in Lyme Regis and offering our advice on how to experience the best of the town during your Lyme Regis holiday.

1. Take a walk along the ancient Cobb, taking in the incredible views of the harbour. The Cobb has long inspired visitors to the town, and has been used as a setting in several great works of literature such as The French Lieutenant’s Woman and Jane Austen’s Persuasion. It’s a really iconic landmark and watching the sun sink behind the harbor in the evening is a truly breathtaking experience.

2. Test your skills on the Lister Gardens crazy golf course – 18 holes of mini golf madness overlooking Lyme Bay. It’s a new course, built above the beach to replace the previous one which was demolished in stabilsation works in the town in 2007. Your only problem will be trying to keep your eye on the ball when surrounded by such stunning views of Lyme Bay and beyond.

3. Join a guided fossil walk along the Jurassic coast, learning about the area’s rich history and scouring the beaches and rocks for fossils with local fossil hunting experts. As long as you follow the fossil hunting code, whatever you find is yours to keep.

If you aren’t successful in unearthing any fossils, you can always visit a fossil shop in Lyme Regis town and pick up something from their selection of fossils, gems and other fossil-related paraphernalia.

4. Enjoy a picturesque stroll along the River Lym Trail, following the river from Lyme Regis town to Uplyme, deep in the Dorset countryside. You’ll encounter rustic thatched cottages, wild flowers and all kinds of local wildlife on your journey, and if you don’t fancy the walk back afterwards, you can catch the Lyme Regis bus every hour outside the Talbot Inn in Uplyme.

5. Go fishing! Book a boat trip, hire some fishing equipment and spend an afternoon fishing for mackerel in the beautiful surroundings of Lyme Bay. Even if you’re not fond of fishing, it is still worth the trip just to see the views!

'Excellent site with clean facilities, friendly staff!'

'Friendly staff, the staff in the shop was incredibly welcoming! Loved how we were escorted to our pitch and also offered help with putting the caravan on the pitch. Swimming pool was small but ideal, good sauna! Outdoor pool was lovely also! Facilities were spotless considering we had awful weather they work extremely hard! Very clean site, great value for money!'

"Definitely will be back"

Good location with Charmouth beach and lyme regis near. Nice facilities on site and nice rooms. The tow bar restaurant is a gem with great food. Liked the activities on our stay like bingo. Overall a good stay and would love to come back again.

"Everything we needed"

Very tidy site, well laid out and well equipped. Towbar restaurant offered a good selection of quality food at all meal times, very good value for money and super friendly service. There is a small shop on site for all your essentials with access to another slightly larger shop in the village. Two pools and children’s play areas plus a gaming room were a real bonus. Shower and toilet blocks were cleaned regularly and always kept in good order. Location is fantastic, especially for avid fossil hunters with Charmouth beach around 20 minutes easy walk away through the village.

"What a wonderful place"

We have just returned from a wonderful holiday at Newlands. We stayed in the studio apartment block down the end (A17). The apartment was incredibly clean, spacious and had everything we needed for a short stay. My twin sons (3.5 years old) had the twin room, mum had the double bed, and I stayed on a blow up mattress that I brought with. We were very comfy.
