How To Get The Most Out Of Your Dorset Staycation

Dorset has been revealed as one of the UK’s favourite destinations for a staycation. A survey of 1,500 people revealed that Dorset is among the top four most popular locations in the country. But it is really not surprising, as there’s so much to see and do in Dorset. Visitors can follow in the footsteps of Jane Austen and her characters around Lyme Regis, visit the former home of Thomas Hardy, or see where Enid Blyton got much of her inspiration for her books. Traditional seaside resorts, and quaint and historic market towns combined with rolling countryside and walking trails, make it the ideal staycation destination for families and anyone looking for a break close to home.

Staycations In Dorset

You do not have to travel thousands of miles to relax and take a well-earned break, enjoy an adventure or just spend quality time with your family. You can still enjoy all the benefits of a vacation even when you stay close to home. Dorset is an ideal family staycation destination that is just as spectacular in the winter as it is in the summer. Three-quarters of the coastline is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while over half of the county is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that offers plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the great outdoors. While it may not mean a long car journey, there is so much to see and do in the county that it will really make you feel that you have gone somewhere different.

Famous Landmarks

Dorset is home to some of the most awe-inspiring landmarks in the country. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Dorset’s Jurassic Coast ranks alongside the Great Barrier Reef and the Grand Canyon as one of the wonders of the world. Must-see landmarks are Durdle Door, a 140 million-year-old limestone arch, and Lulworth Cove, a beautiful shell-shaped cove. There’s also Chesil Beach, a barrier beach in front of a lagoon, and of course, Lyme Regis, known as ‘The Pearl of Dorset’, which offers wonderful coastal walks, museums, unique shops, stunning scenery, family-friendly beaches and delicious food.

Attractions In Dorset

Swanage Railway is Dorset’s heritage railway that offers one of the best ways to take in the country’s incredible views across 12 miles of Purbeck countryside. You can also admire the views from the sea on one of Dorset’s numerous boat tours, which will take you around the Jurassic coastline. Take the children to Monkey World, visit The Tank Museum, or explore magnificent castles such as the very pretty Highcliffe Castle. You can also see Abbotsbury Swannery, and if you are lucky, you might get to feed the 600 resident swans. You can also enjoy a nose around former stately homes such as Kingston Lacy House, which houses one of the UK’s largest private collections of Egyptian relics.

All year round, Dorset offers something for everyone looking for their perfect staycation, thanks to its stunning scenery, impressive landmarks and numerous attractions. No matter what you choose to do, you are sure to make memories you can treasure for a lifetime.

'Excellent site with clean facilities, friendly staff!'

'Friendly staff, the staff in the shop was incredibly welcoming! Loved how we were escorted to our pitch and also offered help with putting the caravan on the pitch. Swimming pool was small but ideal, good sauna! Outdoor pool was lovely also! Facilities were spotless considering we had awful weather they work extremely hard! Very clean site, great value for money!'

"Definitely will be back"

Good location with Charmouth beach and lyme regis near. Nice facilities on site and nice rooms. The tow bar restaurant is a gem with great food. Liked the activities on our stay like bingo. Overall a good stay and would love to come back again.

"Everything we needed"

Very tidy site, well laid out and well equipped. Towbar restaurant offered a good selection of quality food at all meal times, very good value for money and super friendly service. There is a small shop on site for all your essentials with access to another slightly larger shop in the village. Two pools and children’s play areas plus a gaming room were a real bonus. Shower and toilet blocks were cleaned regularly and always kept in good order. Location is fantastic, especially for avid fossil hunters with Charmouth beach around 20 minutes easy walk away through the village.

"What a wonderful place"

We have just returned from a wonderful holiday at Newlands. We stayed in the studio apartment block down the end (A17). The apartment was incredibly clean, spacious and had everything we needed for a short stay. My twin sons (3.5 years old) had the twin room, mum had the double bed, and I stayed on a blow up mattress that I brought with. We were very comfy.
