Axminster Town

Axminster is a delightful market town on the Dorset/Devon border. It is situated on top of a hill and boasts stunning views of the River Axe. The town is made up of a series of charming villages and breath-taking countryside. It is the ideal destination to unwind and appreciate all that nature has to offer.

Despite its small size, there is plenty to do during the day out in Axminster. Here's some of our favourite activities and attractions to check out.

Things to Do Axminster Town

Axe Valley Wildlife Park

We highly recommend a visit to Axe Valley Wildlife Park during a stay at Newlands camping and caravan park. The Zoo is primarily aimed at families with children aged 12 and under, but there's plenty to keep the whole family entertained!

As you walk around the enclosures, you'll see a range of fascinating animals, including beautiful leopard cats, zebras and ball pythons. Spend time reading the information boards, or become a zookeeper to learn more about your favourite animals! This unique experience gives you an up-close look at some of the park's best-loved creatures! During the session, you will have the opportunity to engage in a host of behind-the-scenes activities, including food preparation and enclosure cleaning. The experience will finish with a handling session and educational lesson.

Axminster Heritage Centre

Axminster Heritage Centre is home to a series of exhibitions that walk you through Axminster's fascinating history. The interactive displays showcase the town's interesting past and shine a light on the various industries that have shaped its journey in the years since.

If you're visiting with children, there's no need to worry. The museum has dressing-up points and children's activities to ensure younger members of the family are entertained while also learning about the town’s heritage. With its immersive and engaging experiences, the Axminster Heritage Centre’s Museum promises an enriching and enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages.

Outside you'll find a garden, containing plants that were used to create the dyes that colour Axminster's famous, woven carpets.

Lyme Bay Winery

Lyme Bay Winery is well-known for its exceptional wines and spectacular flavours. Treat yourself to a bottle (or two!) of local wine to enjoy on your return to the park!

The winery boasts a team of friendly and informative staff who are eager to enhance your trip there. Attend one of the guided tasting sessions to learn more about your favourite drinks. There are a range of packages to choose from. Wine tasting must be pre-booked.

Axminster Inn

During your day trip there, it’s important to take a moment to relax and enjoy some local food. Consider visiting Axminster Inn, a friendly pub with inviting staff, and try their delicious food to keep you fuelled for the rest of your day.

Acorn Gift Shop

While in Axminster Town, consider stopping by the unique Acorn Gift Shop. Known for its quirky and traditional products, it is a great place to buy memorable souvenirs and gifts for loved ones.

River Cottage

No trip to River Cottage is complete without a visit to River Cottage - the home and brainchild of TV chef, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. Sign up for one of his acclaimed cooking courses, or book yourself a meal to remember in the exceptional restaurant. All of the food is either grown on-site or supplied by local producers.
