Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens is a sprawling wonderland, filled with exotic and unusual plants from all over the world. It is a must-visit for those who want to connect with nature.

The gravel paths wind their way among colourful flowers, lily ponds and jungle glades. The garden is a visual feast, with every turn offering something new and exciting to discover. To help you navigate your way around, maps are provided at the entrance, and there are also larger maps placed strategically throughout the gardens. As you wander along the garden trails, you will come across statues of Alice in Wonderland scattered amongst the various walks. These whimsical sculptures add a touch of playful charm to the already stunning surroundings.

Info boards are also dotted around, describing the various birds and other wildlife that you might spot as you explore the gardens.

Dogs are also welcome on short leads and must stay on designated paths.

Plants from around the world


Abbotsbury Gardens is a botanical paradise that will delight any nature enthusiast. Situated in a sheltered woodland valley, the garden boasts a micro-climate that supports a vast expanse of lush greenery. Divided into several sub-gardens, each with its own unique charm. There are more than 5,000 plants from around the world. Among the standout sections are the Sino-Himalayan Garden and the Southern Hemisphere Garden, both of which showcase an impressive array of flora, including bamboo and Acers. 

Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens is also world-renowned for its Camellia groves and Magnolias and famed in Dorset for its collections of Rhododendrons and Hydrangeas.

Burma Rope Bridge


One of the garden's highlights is the Burma Rope Bridge. It's one way only, so there's no turning back once you're on it. It sways a lot, and you need to be wearing sensible shoes to get across it, but it's an experience you wouldn't want to miss! On a clear day, there is also an option to climb up a steep hill that rewards you with a breath-taking view of Chesil Beach, the Jurassic cliffs and more.

Wonderland Sculpture Trail


Explore Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens and embark on a magical journey to discover some charming characters. Look out for the playful Cheshire Cat hiding behind the palm fronds and Alice in the Walled Garden. The Robert James Workshop Wonderland Sculpture Trail is now open to the public at Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens.

The Tea Room at Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens - Gluten-free and Vegan Café in Abbotsbury

In addition to its scenic beauty, they have The Tea Room, which is located just before the ticket office at the Gardens, making it an ideal spot to relax and enjoy some delicious food before or after your visit. Their cakes are baked fresh daily in their kitchen, using locally sourced ingredients from local suppliers, so you know you're getting the best quality food around. From creamy cakes to gluten-free and vegan options, there's something for every dietary requirement. 

The Gardens also have a high-quality gift shop and a brilliant plant centre that offers a wide variety of flowers grown within the Garden premises for purchase.

Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens is not only a beautiful place to visit, but it's also an exciting hub of activity all year round. There are various events held throughout the year from the Illuminate Winter Lights exhibition, where the gardens are transformed into an enchanting wonderland with stunning light displays, to theatre shows that take place in the open-air theatre, there's always something to see and do. The gardens also host plant sales, where visitors can purchase plants grown right here on the premises.

Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens is popular with guests staying at Newlands Holidays. It is situated 30 minutes from our Charmouth holiday park and is a fantastic day out for families or couples.
