The Lyme Regis Fossil Festival 2011

16 April 2011

Fossils Lyme Regis

On April 29th to May 1st, the annual Fossil Festival takes over Lyme Regis, bringing all manner of fossil-related scientific, cultural and arts exhibitions to the town. We have a unique geology and history here on the Jurassic Coast stretching back 100s of millions of years, and the Fossil Festival is about bringing all this to life.

There will be a whole host of fun and interesting activities to keep the whole family entertained over the three days. On Friday the events include a guided fossil walk, collage-making, a fossil fair and a dance show entitled 'Desert Crossings'. Saturday features a Mary Anning themed walk, stand-up comedy and a variety of fossil lectures. Finally, on Sunday you can catch the mind-boggling Lyme Regis stone balancer at work, and walk the dinosaur runway to find out what kind of dinosaur you would have been millions of years ago!

A number of expert boffins will be in attendance, including figures from some of the UK's biggest universities and museums, geologist association 'Rockwatch', and the Jurassic Coast World Heritage team.

They will be on hand to help with identifying fossils and answering any questions you might have about Dorset's Jurassic past, when dinosaurs roamed the land and swam in the seas. We might even take Dino Dan along to see what they make of him!
