Scenic Beach & Town Walks Around Dorset This Autumn

25 August 2025

Coastal & Beach Walks

Charmouth to Golden Cap – National Trust

Right on our doorstep, this rewarding walk takes you from Charmouth beach up towards Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast. The climb is steep but short, and the views stretching across Lyme Bay are simply unforgettable. Perfect for a half-day adventure without needing the car.

Lyme Regis to Charmouth

Follow the South West Coast Path between these two iconic towns of the Jurassic Coast. The route is about 2 miles (one way), with the chance to spot fossils, admire rugged cliffs, and finish with fish and chips in Lyme Regis or a cream tea in Charmouth. Do check tide times before setting off, as some parts are impassable at high tide.

Seatown to Golden Cap – National Trust

A short 10-minute drive from Newlands brings you to Seatown, where a direct path takes you up to Golden Cap. This 2.5-mile round walk is one of Dorset’s most popular short hikes, thanks to its dramatic clifftop views.

Stonebarrow Circular Walks – National Trust

Just above Charmouth, Stonebarrow offers a network of circular routes ranging from 2 to 5 miles. It’s a fantastic area for a gentle stroll or a longer ramble, with far-reaching views and plenty of autumn wildlife to spot.

Hive Beach, Burton Bradstock – National Trust

Around 30 minutes from Charmouth, Hive Beach is a beautiful stretch of Chesil Beach. You can enjoy a short beach wander or extend your walk along the cliffs towards Cogden. After your walk, the Hive Beach Café is perfect for warming up with coffee or fresh local seafood.

Town Walks & Local Strolls

Lyme Regis

Just 5 minutes away, Lyme Regis is ideal for a relaxed stroll. Wander along the famous Cobb harbour, explore the seafront gardens, and meander through streets lined with independent shops and galleries. Don’t miss the Lyme Regis Museum for a touch of fossil-hunting history.

Bridport & West Bay

Only 15 minutes from Charmouth, Bridport is a lively market town full of artisan shops and cafés. Combine your visit with a short walk at West Bay, where dramatic cliffs and a working harbour set the scene for a leisurely seafront wander.

Axminster

A short hop over the border into Devon, Axminster is a charming market town with plenty of local character. Stroll the historic streets, enjoy the River Axe walk, and perhaps stop by the market on Thursdays for a taste of local produce.

Beaminster

Just 25 minutes away, Beaminster is a pretty town surrounded by rolling countryside. Take a gentle town walk past Georgian houses and historic churches, or follow one of the footpaths that lead straight from the town into the hills.

Tips for Autumn Walks

  • Wear sturdy shoes, as paths can be muddy in autumn.

  • Layer up; weather can change quickly by the coast.

  • Always check tide times before beach walks.

  • Reward your efforts with a cosy pub lunch or café stop at the end.
