Jurassic Coast Camping - How to Spend the Perfect Weekend in Charmouth

05 July 2012

When summer comes around we all start to feel the holiday urge tugging away at us, but actually organising a family break is not always easy. Finding a good time to take off work when the kids are on holiday can be tricky, and recent surveys show that many Britons are unable to switch off on their holidays because they’re too worried about what’s going on back in the office!

The antidote to these holiday woes is the weekend break. You get two days of fun and relaxation and a welcome change of scenery, all without having to take any time out from work or school. Here’s our guide to the ideal weekend Jurassic Coast camping break here in Charmouth...

Friday – Arrive in Charmouth

If you can, try to get here on Friday evening. That way you can get settled and have a good night’s sleep, ready to get out and about on Saturday morning. If you rent a tent, we’ll pitch it for you so it’ll be all ready for your arrival!

Saturday – Climb Golden Cap

When you’re all up and ready, we suggest you make the short walk through Charmouth down to the beach. This will acquaint you with our lovely old town and give you a chance to stop for breakfast in one of the many wonderful little cafes.

With your morning refreshments taken care of, West Dorset is your oyster. There’s so much to do here, and one of our favourite activities is the picturesque walk between Seatown and Golden Cap. You can either drive or get a bus to Seatown. Once there, follow this guide we wrote for the walk. Prepare yourself for some stunning views!

Sunday – Visit Lyme Regis and go fossil hunting

You can’t leave without first experiencing Lyme Regis. Visitors have been falling in love with this gorgeous seaside town for hundreds of years, and we recommend a walk along the famous 13th century Cobb sea wall, followed by a fish and chip lunch by the harbour.

If you have time in the afternoon before you head home, you can also have a go at one of the area’s most famous pursuits – fossil hunting! The beaches of Charmouth and Lyme Regis are among the best places in the world to find fossilised remains, and you can either join a tour led by local fossil experts or simply have a go yourselves.

Remember, you get to keep whatever you find, so if you do unearth any prehistoric treasures you will have a great souvenir to take home of your weekend in Dorset!
