Charmouth Fossil Events

31 July 2019

Throughout August Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre will be hosting a number of fossil themed events, aimed at introducing visitors to the areas rich geological history. Each day there will be a variety of fun, family friendly activities on offer, with something for all age groups to enjoy. The visitor centre is located on Charmouth beach and just a short drive or walk from our Dorset holiday park.

Visiting the heritage centre is free of charge and there are a selection of exciting exhibits and interactive displays to peruse. They give an excellent insight into the Jurassic Coast and the prehistoric marine life that once thrived in the nearby waters. There is a small fee for fossil activities.

Fossil Hunting Walks

Discover your very own piece of Dorset's history on a guided fossil hunting walk. Join the heritage centre's wardens on Charmouth beach as you search for fossils amongst the rocks and along the shoreline. The 2 hour session starts with a 20 minute talk about Charmouth's history and the types of fossil you can expect to find. The centre's team of expert wardens will be on hand to offer fossil hunting tips and tricks and identify any treasures you find. The summer holidays are an extremely busy time of year so booking is essential.

Fossil Arts and Crafts

Budding artists will enjoy a range of fossil themed arts and crafts activities, which take place in the Charmouth Coast Heritage Centre. The programme changes on a daily basis so you can try something new each time you visit. Micro Sieving gives little ones the chance to uncover tiny fossils, which they can take home to commemorate their visit. Theres also the chance to polish a slice of ammonite or decorate a fossil plaster cast.

Rockpool Ramble

Further along the coast at Lyme Regis you can take part in a 'Rockpool Ramble' with members of the marine warden team. Search out tiny creatures and plant life as the tide goes out and learn more about the important role they play.
