5 Reasons to Visit Lyme Regis in the Autumn

With the school holidays over and Lyme Regis returning to normal after the summer bustle, there’s no better time to visit the town known as ‘the Pearl of Dorset’. If you are camping or caravanning with us this autumn, here are 5 reasons why making the short hop to Lyme Regis is an absolute must!

1.    Lyme ArtsFest

Lyme Regis goes art crazy every year in September, as over 100 shops, cafes and other venues are transformed into temporary galleries showcasing the best of local art. The festival is in its 7th year, and is supported by the National Arts Council. If you’re interested in the craft behind the exhibited work, take the opportunity to meet the artists in their studios!

2.    Fossil Hunting without the crowds

Though many fossil hunters uncover fantastic finds in the summer, unquestionably the best time to do it is in autumn and winter. The rougher seas and more inclement weather at this time of year wears away the cliffs, exposing new fossils that have lain hidden in the rock for millions of years. So there’s more to find, and fewer people looking!

3.    Food, glorious food!

Lyme Regis is a foodie’s paradise. As well as fish and chips, cream teas and other lovely Dorset classics, Lyme Regis offers the opportunity for some truly exceptional fine dining. The Hix Oyster and Fish House has locally sourced seafood and wonderful views over the bay, while the Alexandra restaurant serves award winning food and wine with a fusion of traditional and contemporary styles.

4.    Music and shows

Lyme Regis has a thriving cultural scene, which really comes into its own at this time of year as we head towards Christmas. The Marine Theatre is the hub of cultural life in Lyme, hosting music, comedy and theatre performances to suit all tastes.

5.    The Cobb

To get the full benefit of walking Lyme’s famous Cobb harbour wall, you need to experience it not in summer but in Autumn, when you can feel the sea breeze whistle through your hair and watch the waves leap up against the old medieval stone.
