Seaton to Seatown Walk

Route Highlights

Seaton to Lyme Regis (via Axmouth)

Begin your adventure in Seaton, a bustling seaside town with a vibrant esplanade. The trail leads out to Axmouth, a picturesque village nestled by the estuary. Take a detour to the harbor for a chance to enjoy crabbing or soaking in the peaceful views.

Leaving Axmouth, the path winds through rolling hills and along cliff edges, offering breathtaking vistas of the coastline. Passing Bindon Cliffs, walkers are treated to dramatic geological features and occasional wildlife sightings. Descending into Lyme Regis, the trail rewards you with spectacular views of this historic and charming harbour town.

Lyme Regis to Charmouth

As you leave Lyme Regis, take a moment to explore Monmouth Beach, famous for its fossil-filled ammonite pavements. The coastal path between Lyme Regis and Charmouth hugs the cliffs and offers stunning views, but this section is prone to landslips. Detours may occasionally be required, so always check local updates before setting off. Charmouth itself is a delightful stop, with its fossil-rich beach and a chance to visit the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre to learn about the area's fascinating geology.

Charmouth to Golden Cap

The climb to Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast at 191 meters, is a highlight of this walk. The steep ascent is challenging but well worth it. At the summit, you’ll find wildflower meadows and one of the most spectacular panoramic views in the region. On a clear day, you can see as far as Portland to the east and Start Point in Devon to the west.

Golden Cap to Seatown

From Golden Cap, the path descends gently towards Seatown, a peaceful coastal village with a shingle beach. Seatown is the perfect place to rest and enjoy a well-deserved refreshment at one of the local pubs, with the sounds of the sea as your backdrop.

Practical Tips

  • Be prepared for varied terrain: This walk includes steep climbs and descents, especially around Golden Cap. Walking poles and sturdy footwear are recommended.
  • Check trail conditions: Sections of the path, especially near Charmouth, may be subject to landslips and diversions. Always check for updates on the South West Coast Path website.
  • Navigation aids: Carry a map or GPS device to ensure you stay on the correct route, particularly where detours are in place.

Ecological and Historical Notes

  • Geological wonder: This walk traverses the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site showcasing 185 million years of Earth's history in its cliffs and fossil-rich beaches.
  • Golden Cap flora and fauna: Look out for wildflowers, butterflies, and seabirds as you approach the summit.
  • Smuggling history: Discover the area's ties to smuggling, with hidden coves and tales of maritime intrigue adding to the journey's mystique.

Embark on this unforgettable journey from Seaton to Seatown and experience the very best of the Jurassic Coast. Whether you're drawn to the natural beauty, the history, or the thrill of the hike, this walk offers something for everyone.

'Excellent site with clean facilities, friendly staff!'

'Friendly staff, the staff in the shop was incredibly welcoming! Loved how we were escorted to our pitch and also offered help with putting the caravan on the pitch. Swimming pool was small but ideal, good sauna! Outdoor pool was lovely also! Facilities were spotless considering we had awful weather they work extremely hard! Very clean site, great value for money!'

"Definitely will be back"

Good location with Charmouth beach and lyme regis near. Nice facilities on site and nice rooms. The tow bar restaurant is a gem with great food. Liked the activities on our stay like bingo. Overall a good stay and would love to come back again.

"Everything we needed"

Very tidy site, well laid out and well equipped. Towbar restaurant offered a good selection of quality food at all meal times, very good value for money and super friendly service. There is a small shop on site for all your essentials with access to another slightly larger shop in the village. Two pools and children’s play areas plus a gaming room were a real bonus. Shower and toilet blocks were cleaned regularly and always kept in good order. Location is fantastic, especially for avid fossil hunters with Charmouth beach around 20 minutes easy walk away through the village.

"What a wonderful place"

We have just returned from a wonderful holiday at Newlands. We stayed in the studio apartment block down the end (A17). The apartment was incredibly clean, spacious and had everything we needed for a short stay. My twin sons (3.5 years old) had the twin room, mum had the double bed, and I stayed on a blow up mattress that I brought with. We were very comfy.
