Newlands is situated in the village of Charmouth, one of the designated “gateway towns” to the Jurassic Coast. The village has small but varied selection of shops, including a butcher, a chemist, a craft shop, a hairdresser, and a fossil shop. It also boasts tennis courts, a church and two pubs!
Charmouth has been a renowned holiday destination since the 18th and 19th centuries, and in its time has attracted many distinguished visitors such as the great British novelist Jane Austen.
Today it is mainly known for its beach, and the incredible prehistoric fossils that are found there. It’s a family-friendly beach that slopes very gently to the water and contains many rockpools that kids love to explore. So whether you are dedicated fossil hunters or a family with young kids on a picnic, Charmouth beach will be the perfect setting!
On the seafront you will find the Charmouth Heritage Centre, which is full of tips on how to safely look for fossils with educational touch screen multimedia and still life displays. If you don't have your own rock hammer, you can hire one from the fossil shop for a small fee.
Throughout the main season Charmouth market is just a short walk away from the park, in addition to regular markets during the week at Axminster, Bridport and Dorchester.
